Short answer
There is no official hang tag size, but about 5 × 7.5 cm (2" × 3") is the usual default for T-shirts and basics. Taller tags such as 5 × 10 cm (2" × 4") suit hoodies and jackets and leave room for a price and care notes. Packuva makes rectangles and squares; 100 tags in 5 × 7.5 cm (2" × 3") cost $59.20 ($0.592 each).
What is the standard size for a clothing hang tag?
No standard body sets one hang tag size: printers call either 2 × 3 in or 2 × 3.5 in the usual apparel size (as of October 2026). OXO Packaging calls 2 × 3 in the standard size, while 4OVER4 and Chicago Tag describe 2 × 3.5 in as the default or one of the most common. Both are narrow rectangles that hang neatly from a collar or waistband, so either is a safe first choice.
| Size | Shape | Good for | 100 tags |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 × 7.5 cm (2" × 3") | Rectangle | T-shirts, basics, accessories | $59.20 ($0.592 each) |
| 5 × 10 cm (2" × 4") | Tall rectangle | Hoodies, jeans, jackets | $62.16 ($0.622 each) |
| 6.5 × 10 cm (2.5" × 4") | Wide tall rectangle | Outerwear, premium pieces, more text | $65.12 ($0.651 each) |
| 5 × 5 cm (2" × 2") | Small square | Kids' clothes, socks, small accessories | $59.20 ($0.592 each) |
| 7.5 × 7.5 cm (3" × 3") | Square | A logo-first tag, gift sets | $63.34 ($0.633 each) |
| 10 × 10 cm (4" × 4") | Large square | Bags, blankets, statement tags | $74.00 ($0.740 each) |
Which hang tag size should I use for each type of clothing?
A 5 × 7.5 cm (2" × 3") hang tag suits most T-shirts and everyday basics; move to a taller or larger tag when the garment is heavier or the tag has more to say. Match the tag to the garment's size and to what you print on it:
- T-shirts, tank tops, basics: 5 × 7.5 cm (2" × 3"). Room for the logo on the front and price or size on the back.
- Hoodies, jeans, jackets: 5 × 10 cm (2" × 4") or 6.5 × 10 cm (2.5" × 4"). A taller tag stays in proportion on a heavier garment and fits care notes or a short brand story.
- Kids' clothes, socks, small accessories: 5 × 5 cm (2" × 2"), so the tag does not hide the product.
- Gift sets, bags, homeware: 7.5 × 7.5 cm (3" × 3") or 10 × 10 cm (4" × 4"), where a square tag reads as a label for the whole item.
What pixel size should a hang tag design file be?
A hang tag design file should be 300 pixels for every inch of the tag, because printers ask for 300 dpi at the final print size. Multiply each side in inches by 300: a 2 × 3 in tag needs at least 600 × 900 pixels. A vector file (AI, PDF, EPS or SVG) has no pixel size and prints sharp at any size.
| Tag size | Pixels at 300 dpi |
|---|---|
| 5 × 7.5 cm (2" × 3") | 600 × 900 px |
| 5 × 10 cm (2" × 4") | 600 × 1200 px |
| 6.5 × 10 cm (2.5" × 4") | 750 × 1200 px |
| 5 × 5 cm (2" × 2") | 600 × 600 px |
| 7.5 × 7.5 cm (3" × 3") | 900 × 900 px |
| 10 × 10 cm (4" × 4") | 1200 × 1200 px |
Keep text and logos at least 2 mm away from the drilled hole and the cut edges, as Packuva's artwork notes ask. If a colour or photo runs to the edge of the tag, many printers also ask for 3 mm of bleed on each side. Packuva accepts PDF, AI, EPS, PSD, PNG, JPG, SVG, WEBP.
Where should the hole go on a hang tag?
Packuva drills the hang tag hole at the top centre, top left or top right; top centre is the usual choice because the tag hangs straight. Choose a corner hole for angled or asymmetric designs, or when several tags share one string. Leave the area around the hole free of text so the string does not cover it.
How thick should hang tag card be?
Packuva hang tags are printed on 14pt or 16pt cardstock; 14pt is the standard rigid card and 16pt is the heavier, stiffer option for a more premium feel. Thicker card resists bending in a shop or in the post. Both take full-colour printing on one or both sides, and gold foil and metallic inks are included at no extra cost.
Should a hang tag be attached with string or a safety pin?
String is the usual way to attach a clothing hang tag, and Packuva tags come with the string already tied: black or white, or a custom colour. Loop it through a button hole, belt loop or the garment's care label. A safety pin or plastic tag fastener is quicker on a production line but can leave a hole in fine knits and silk, so keep it for sturdy fabrics.
Which hang tag shapes can I choose from?
Packuva cuts hang tags as an oval rectangle, rectangle, square, circle, diamond, angled tag (clipped top corners), skinny tag or a custom die-cut outline. The shape changes the outline, not the size you choose, so a skinny tag suits a narrow logo and a circle suits a round one.
When are Packuva hang tags not the right choice?
- You need fewer than 100 tags of a design. Packuva's minimum is 100 per design; a local print shop can do a handful.
- You need a size not listed above, such as 2 × 3.5 in. Packuva makes the sizes in the table only.
- You need tags tomorrow. A Packuva order takes 10–21 days from proof approval with standard shipping, or 6–12 days from proof approval with express shipping with express shipping.
What else do brands ask about hang tag sizes?
Can I print on both sides of the tag?
Yes. Choose both-sides print in the configurator: for example, the logo on the front and the price, size or care notes on the back.
Is gold foil extra on hang tags?
No. Gold foil and metallic inks are included in the price.
How long until I see a proof?
You get a digital proof within 12 hours, and nothing is made until you approve it.
Do I need hang tags and woven labels?
They do different jobs: the hang tag comes off at purchase, and a woven label stays on the garment. Both start at 100 units per design, so many brands order them together.
